Bitter Sweet Lullaby

by Ronald v Pijkeren

Nothing but bitter sweet lullabies for the occupants of these beds.

These torture beds were used during the genocidal rule of Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge in the secret prison of Tuol Sleng (aka S21) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

    …scarry… and terrible of course

  5. Warren Brooke says:

Every tourist who has ever been to Cambodia has taken the same pictures.

  6. Ronald says:

@ Warren: I know what you’re trying to say. Thing is, a lot of people have taken pictures in the same place, that’s true. But creating images, thinking about how to shoot, when to shoot, making a selection and telling stories is something completely different than taking a photo just for “registration”. Which is what a lot of tourists do.

Nice pics, would’ve liked to see more. What is Warren on about, let’s see some of those tourist snaps. Like saying, why take pics in Paris, every tourist who has ever been there takes the same pictures.

I have no doubt about your photographic abilities here, im purely looking at it from an interest point of view.
@Matt, there is more to Cambodia than Tuol Sleng and yes if i do see another picture of the Eiffel tower i will kill myself, no matter how good the picture quality is and what angle it was taken at.

VERY few photos… no impact at all. Had to play 3 times to feel anything.

$he most I felt was from the pic on the wall in the third frame - which isn’t even yours!

Thanks for all the comments and criticism. I especialy welcome he latter. There’s too many people (not only here but also on Flickr for example) who are afraid of criticizing someone elses’ work. I get tired of all those “amazing image stuff”. Back to this competition. In genral, too many people base their comments on individual images. Let’s not forget that this is about telling stories by means of a SERIES. I see too many series which contain way too much images. Some of the images within a series are really good, others within the same series are really bad or don’t fit in the series and therefore imo the series as a whole is downgraded. What these comments also show is that there always is a strong “personal” thing involved. Like Ali, he’s only touched by the man on the bed, so the “act” itself. Noting wrong with that. Other people are touched by a certain kind of atmosphere created by a series of images (like myself). Nothing wrong with that either. If I look at all the comments in this competition, it tells me one thing. Photography is an art form. Art is imo very personal, so many people, so many opinions. Os course this competition has its rules and boundaries. Which is, again: telling stories with a series of images, combined with the right words. Let’s see how the judges feel.

Sorry, but I kinda agree with Warren! Though his phrasing is “bitter” and not “sweet” at all :)

    Ronald! Alles goed?

I really like this; love the black-grey-yellow colour combination. The eerie atmosphere in that place is conveyed perfectly by this series; the beds, the locks, dirty walls, etc. Silent witnesses to what happened - like touched a disgusting piece of history.
I can’t agree with Warren that every tourist has taken these shots. I didn’t see to many people shooting square format film when I was there anyway.
Only critique or comment is the series title; I don’t get it I think.

    Spreek je later!
