California Lost

by Keith Skelton

This is a long term project photographing the oddities and remains of people who have tried to "make it" in the California Desert. Most of the photos have been taken between Palmdale, the Mexican border, and east to the Arizona border. Photographs taken in the California Desert between 2000 and 2009.

Makes the desert look like a bizarre filigree organism … wonderful shot!

  2. Tong-Jin says:

    wonderful story

  3. Love the aerials and close-ups

  4. ckalberer says:

The work tells a beautiful narrative. The textural close-ups are wonderfully abstracted. I really enjoyed these photos.

  5. Kimi Mann says:

I love these photos. They all evoke emotional resonances through capturing light, shadow and telling detail: isolation, the ravages of time past and a desolate present, a ribbon road into an uncertain future. Great photography.

I Loved the Slideshow! Your work always amazes me. It’s just a great concept and the photos tell it so well that it stirs so many emotions in me that I had to review the pictures over and over!

  7. Kathy says:

I’ve always loved your B&W work, but usually associated it with portraits. Again, I see your work and learn. Yet another lesson that dramatic art is all around us if we just open our eyes and remove our paradigms. This body of work evokes so much emotion, and demands the viewer to study it closely and reflect. Awesome.

  8. Matt says:

Too many images, good though they are, I didn’t make it to the end.

i agree with matt. you should condens it down and think about what you really wanna tell. there are too many repetitions - all those signs for example. one would be enough. same with the detailed shots. somehow they all do not come together really.
