INSENSIBLE ADDICTION
by Maria Rudnaya
The series of photos show one day of one person’s life. The photos are in chronological order. Every picture shows one particular fragment: waking up in bed, checking the e-mails, going to works, meeting up with friends, etc.
The photos are in documentary style, but in fact, they are not documentary at all. Every photo is staged and posed. The person is picking the nose on every picture, when nobody sees it (though, sometimes there are other people present, they are busy with their own things).
In fact, the person on the photos is me. And picking the nose is addiction that I’ve had through all my life. A lot of people in my surrounding do not notice it. Though, those who are close to me of course do.
With this series I wanted to show, how I deal with this in my everyday environment. And I wanted to understand it better and to get read of it. But till now it did not help me :)
I really hope that this series can help other people, to start looking from side on their own addictions… Or at least make them laugh or smile at me. And if you know anyway to quite this addiction, please, let me know!
Hilarious, i actually know a friend who constantly has his finger up his nose, i should introduce you to him
Maria likes pictures a lot!
Great work!!! i love the light and contrast in your photos. To quit the adiction i think you can put a lot of tape in your fingers in both hands, to stop stick your nose, or cut your fingers jeje its joke! My best wishes to you GOOD LUCK!
P.D.: say hello to patricio for me
KUKU))
not really a story that’s worth being told on a documentary award! guess there are more important subjects on the competition!
Why is this in a documentary competition?… and have over 800 votes… are people just oblivious to the definition of the category?
Hш everybody!
Thank you for your comments.
First of all, I must admit, that I intended to submit the series as ‘conceptual’. May be, I have made a mistake during submission… Finally the series appeared as ‘documentary’ (against my conscious wish).
On the other hand, I do not see any reason, why this series can not be considered as documentary. It represents my everyday life (besides, the last photo). I was taking my camera in everyday situations and put it on timer or asked somebody to help me. If I could only appear double and take real documentary pictures of myself during the day, I would make the same series with all the spaces and people (colleagues, neighbors and friends).
And what is importance? Important for whom? Is it a part of documentary photography definition? I agree that the wars and the life of the people in the 3rd world countries are very important for society. But does it mean that another documentary series do not have right to exist? And should importance be the main criteria for the best documentary series?
Anyway, if you think, that I am mistaking and my series is the worst in documentary submission, you could collect some votes and write to organizers. I would not mind, if it will be shifted to ‘conceptual’ part, where it intended to be
Cheers,
Maria.
I’m sorry. The photos are okay but I want to know why the essay wasn’t done on people wiping their ass. Certainly people pick their nose to clean it. Maybe a nervous habit? But a documentary? Hey Viewbook…do you know when voting is loaded?
I ask to Viewbook to fix out the vote bug as soon as possible, is not fear at all to challenge with who doesn’t respect the rules. 800 votes in a couples a days? No way is possible!
500 votes in one night for at most averagely pictures. amazing!
is this a serious contest? it does not look like it. why people always spoil everything? viewbook: don’t you have a reputation to defend?
Patience friends, we still have a jury.
Good job! Patricio’s sister
Good shots. Well done!
Awesome serie!! love the concept!
guess viewbook should somehow close the loopholes for cheat! Boring pictures, wrong category and anyway 1000 votes within 2 days! haha
This makes a mockery of the whole category… this has more votes than some very very emotive subjects… these images of course have a right to exist… but they are not documentary… they are a concept… its staged… its not life as it happened its life by design so becomes nothing more than a photograph of an idea… which is all well and good… but its not a document of life as it happens naturally… there are no moments of a defining nature. All this is a document to is the apathy and banality of contemporary life today… that picking your nose is a prescient issue in a world wide documentary competition. What a devolved human race we are.
Hi everybody!
I am surprised myself, that I have got so many votes.
I was actually thinking about sending the link to all my friends, but I did not do it yet
I left it for later.
I have only sent the link to a couple of friends and published it on facebook (where I have around 100 friends, but not 1000).
I am sorry to hear, that this irritates so many of you. It is not my fault.
I also think that if a series went through the viewbook preselection as documentary than it has equal rights with the other series to be voted for (even, if I made a mistake during the submission).
Anyway, thank you for voting, those, who vote! Keep on voting, if you like the work. I really appreciate it.
Cheers,
Maria.
Oh grow up everyone! This isn’t exactly Magnum or Worldpress, there are about 5 good stories on here and the rest are holiday snaps or some bored flickr houswife/husband.
Who cares how many votes or which category it is in.
The prize is rubbish anyways.
I think if you can’t take some considered critique like a ‘grown up’… don’t enter a competition that advocates it!… it’s not about the ‘prize’ its about the value of work… and I agree with Maria… you have to question the Viewbook pre-selection here… as this is obviously a conceptual piece of work and not a documentary.
I really think that this work is great and it is worth the award in documentary photography.
Definitely there are a lot of great photos in this submission. But ask yourself:
How many times during the last year you have seen completely similar pictures (just think about World Press Photo, etc.)?
Why do we want always to see the same templates?
And if we are so much into photography of the global world’s problem, why can’t we solve them, but make the global situation everyday even worse?
Maybe we should first look deeper inside ourselves and only then go for global things?
I also do not see any problem with the staged nature of the series. More than a half of documentary photography nowadays is in fact staged. The only difference is that in this case, the author told us the truth about it.
This series is original. This is simple and personal. I give my full vote for it.
Those who do not like it are simply jealous and nothing more.
“More than a half of documentary photography nowadays is in fact staged.” This is unrespectful and bullshit! And I just can’t believe that ANY story will get 1000 votes within 3 days without cheating!
Saying that half of documentary photographs are staged makes it valid to in turn stage more is no case for a valid argument… and just because the author was honest about ‘faking’ these shots in no way makes it a pressing, relevant theme or subject… of course pain and suffering are not the only themes for documentary and the idea that they are is nonsense… one of the best shoots in this category is about ballerinas… and reflect many human emotional dynamics and is not just a middle class photographer dipping their toe into someone else’s anguish.
As for the human races inherent apathy and ignorance to righting or acknowledging the worlds problems and documentary photography reflecting our nature and actions being part of the problem… I would suggest its a documentary photographers duty to reflect human nature, as it is, as it happens and to never stage it, manipulate it or manufacturer it. What truth can it ever convey if its faked?…
Documentary is about being an eye witness to reality, its less about the ego of the photographers notion of conceptuality and more about preserving and sharing the reality of the world around us.
As for the idea of jealousy, far from it… if we can’t have a discourse about how images make us feel… whats the point in showing them and opening them up to interpretation?
I find this set very original and I am sure that it is worth to be seriously considered by the jury.
Original work always encounters criticism and that’s exactly what we see in the comments. What kind of an art world do you get without criticism?
It perfectly fits the documentary style as it describes a regular day of a real person.
Maria, you did an excellent job! Good luck!
Too pathetic, makes me even pain Maria pretends not to know anything about bug votes. She even boasted that she didn’t send the link to all his friends!
Too pathetic, because Viewbook knows which are the jobs that have “really” more votes, the other night they did a test by removing the ratings “double”, this project was less than 50 votes!
Too pathetic to think that Mary really thinks that more than 1800 “different” people have been able to vote this photographic work!
Update Voting system
Unfortunately the voting system in the Viewbook PhotoStory website did not proof to be as hack proof as it should have been. As you might have noticed some photo stories received remarkably high amounts of votes within short periods of time. We consequently monitor all votes also with Google Analytics, which enables us to trace fraudulent votes. On Tuesday 25 August we removed fraudulent votes from some of the photo stories and implemented an updated and more secure voting application.

haha, this is great, Maria. keep it up.
why don’t you stick your finger up your nose know and take another shot? very artistically, of course. concept. bah!
After request of the photographer, this photo story got placed in the conceptual category after being in the documentary category for some time. We agree that, though this story has documentary characteristics it fits better in the conceptual category.
original idea! Well done!
The most ridiculous concept I’ve seen in my life and the most ridiculous application form. disgrace.
Stupid concept, sorry:)
Here is the respect for labor.
Viewbook Congratulations, Thank you on behalf of all competitors!
No need to fraud!!!!
stupid Maria
lol!
I especially like the last picture.
Stop this cookies hacking animals!
Hey! You start doing tricks again. Someone get disqualified this stupid.
Hey admins!!! Work work!
These pictures are really great. Good lighting and I love the complimenting colors! There is a good, consistent sense of style in them too!
Sister i think you are an aimless person, why you are always doing trick? always admins delete your votes, okay? and you have really stupid gallery.
You have started again, I think viewbook admins are very understanding but I think they have to disqualify you.
great pics. I really like your concept. It’s very funny… keep going..
bogus contest. admin you are laughing in everybody’s faces. shame on you.
That’s the most weird voting system I ever saw. I try to vote for this original gallery and the number of votes does not increase. Hey admins, could you leave us to decide whom we like? Isn’t it public voting contest? Why do you encourage voting for your favorite ones and block the voting for the others?
I just wanted to give my vote for this series. The total amount of the votes was 535. After I pushed the button it increased to 536. But after refresh it is 535 again. How is this possible?
Why I cannot vote for this series?
What’s going on with the votes? I voted yesterday but nothing changed??? How is it possible?
Krute! ))
Prikolno!
prikol
On each of these pictures I see myself) Thank you very much. I look at the pictures and smile. They are beautiful, simple and trully vital.
Hey Maria! I’m surprised!)) It is bold!
Are you joking, or are you serious? This was my first impression! =) I can see your femininity!.. some pictures… it’s incredibly interesting! And so honest!

Great Project! Keep up with the good work. Greeting from someone, who drove you to Rosenheim once (-;
it’s you in your element. I do it alway too =) But I don’t think so ofen like you in the day =)
I enjoyed this series…there is great spontaneity and wit in your approach - two elements that are often left out as we go about consciously ‘documenting life’.
nice picture, nice idea!
