outside inside

by Tomas Cochello Ortiz

Denmark saw the uprising of an alternative community on 1971. The abandoned military barracks from the 18th century became the open public space to the neighborhood of Christianhavn. All kind of people have intended to find place in the wilderness of what became to be Christiania.

Christiania is considered to be one of the biggest and most influential communities of Europe. The social expression of these alternative settlements belong to the breakthrough of a generation that emerged with strong essence for its thoughts and lifestyle during the seventies. Christiania has been sought as a place for its emerging sub-cultures and its creative environment.

The shift on the political sphere on 2004 made the government to decide to put an end to the autonomy of Christiania, and its unique rich environment on the middle of the city. The economic reason at many levels behind it has brought difficulties to the Danish society and the existence of the Freetown.

On march 26th. 2009 the Federal Court of Denmark found "in favour of the state property board, the site belongs to the state", which means the social and cultural habitat of Christiania is in severe danger of extinction.
