The whole story of Guantanamo Bay prison camp emerges as a horrifying experiment. The terrorist suspects were given numbers by which they were addressed instead of their own names. In this tormenting place they became guinea pigs in a vast experiment of methods to crack the human soul.
Mubarak Hussain Bin Abul Hashem is the only Bangladeshi to have returned from Guantanamo bay after five years of imprisonment. While under us army custody, he was known as “Enemy Combatant Number – 151”.
On 17th of December, 2006, a special US Air Force plane flew Mubarak back to Bangladesh after failing to get any clue of his alleged terror links. Bringing the story of his shattered past into life visually for the first time was an extremely difficult yet critical challenge for me. But it was crucial to vividly exhibit the human cost of ‘Land of the free’s’ ill-conceived and violently executed “War on Terror”. Which, like for so many others, changed the life of a Bangladeshi named Mubarak Hussain forever.

Brilliant works. This kind of theme only possible by you .keep it up .cheers
This is an excellent project. Beyond simple documentation of a topic, Land of the Free explores its subject matter in an innovative way, successfully building the emotive aspect of the theme.
I agree with your comments.
In capital…Humanity always under threat…by the religion, by the law, by the nationality…& US- the Nation of Capitalist…
Fantastic… Shumon. I am proud of this project since you did it as my course work.
This is a strikingly beautiful and thoughtful aesthetically and is a great example of using these qualities to portray very serious subject matter. The inclusion of the black dog also alludes to depression (an australian interpretation) and reminds me of josef kudelka’s black wolf. A great series.
Free of that land, at last, and hopefully, through this excellent project, free of a mind, which may cling to the past!
well done Shumon Bhai !!! like it very much …
This is undoubtedly a strong body of work. And i believe good works should get the recognition of its highest. Its been a long time since i’ve been hearing about Guantanamo but never really seen any work done by my fellow photographers in my country. This is the kind of story that people should know. All the best to you.
Job well done my friend. : )
Every human…at the end of the day wants food to eat, and a place to live….help stop controversy, hate, and spite…tomorrow start a new day..smile as you pass people because that smile can make someone’s day!
great work!
I know about this work briefly. It’s brilliant, creative and deep work. I appreciate Shumon to do this work. To criticize the artist for his meanings and associations is like to criticize someone for using very different word for an apple; just because his language is different. This is the artist’s language and I have to respect his language. We always like to see the reality, but we forgot about the inner massages which the artist wants to share with us. In this work Shumon gives us a Strong social massage, for that I appreciate him.
Great job! I will not comment on any side of this but with no doubt this brings to some thoughts…
