  2. Why would the future be a dark and dangerous place? Is this fear necessary, not needed or even worst a self fulfilling prophecy?

    Carsten Fleck

For me this is a classic Carsten image: elegantly raw; thought provoking; a seductive invitation that provokes me, as the observer, to stop and contemplate how I see the image. It challenges me in how I might perceive the world, and even how I might see myself!

This particular image creates instant questions and paradox for me: what am I not supposed to leave and why am I not supposed to leave it? If it were just a stand alone image I might only appreciate it as a foreboding, graffiti-esque like documentation. But in Carsten like style, the title of the series “Fear of the future” drags me deeper into the work and a potential meaning, triggering up multiple layers and interpretations. The image and the title combined are like a meditative Sutra for me, ( a word or short pithy statement that is used to provoke new insight, understanding and awareness).

What am I not supposed to leave? My answer would be the present moment. Why am I not supposed to leave it? Because I am all too familiar that when I leave the present moment for the past, I get stuck in the past; I suffer because I am dwelling on things that occurred in that past. While I lose myself (and present time experience) while I’m in the past, I might also then project that past onto my future; I imagine the past will BE my future, and that is very frightening proposition; a way of thinking that only amplifies my suffering.

A warning to not leave the present moment; to be present with what is in that moment; without judging, evaluating or comparing, creates space. Space is freedom; you can navigate your way if you have space and freedom. There is no space in the past, and the future is filled with infinite probabilities. In the “allowing” of that moment, and every moment to come, my awareness does not need to fixate, worry and fear the future, because my freedom comes in “my” ability to be in the now, to be present with what is. Every now was once a future; now is the only moment that really matters…
