Resurrecting Ophelia
by Kalliope Amorphous
Resurrecting Ophelia is a series of conceptual self-portraits. These photographs explore the poetic symbolism inherent in the archetype of Ophelia. The image of the drowned woman has often been viewed as a romanticized construction to writers and artists, particularly to the Pre-Raphaelite movement. From the first known mermaid stories of Assyria to the alleged medieval “trials by drowning” used on women suspected of witchcraft, the mythos of the woman imprisoned underwater is an archaic and multi-dimensional archetype.I like to think of these images as semiotic dreamscapes, which offer more questions than answers. On another level, I am also playing with the idea of water as both womb and tomb. That is, the element of water as it relates to birth, death and regression. I am working through personal ideas of isolation and alienation in this images. For me, Ophelia is both the demanding and the contemplative ghost. These photographs were made with available light and without post processing or digital effects added other than tone adjustments. All of the effects in this series were created in-camera using various surfaces such as glass, veils, and screens.
I love this! Really nice interpretation.
Wonderful series - even if the promissed resurrection did not really occur
Superior interpretive lens-work on a difficult subject to work upon.
