Bon Voyage

by Raed Bawayah

This photographic story was created in Paris, when I first came to Europe. This is also the time when I left the heavy political situation of my home country- Palestine. It is s about three months after my arrival in france, that I started this project on a small community of gypsies from Eastern Europe living in Aubervilliers, suburbs of Paris. We had a common point, which enhanced my desire to take pictures: wanting to fulfill a dream by leaving our respective living conditions for a city like Paris. For two months I shared with these people microcosm, speaking hardly any French and just a few words of English. As I watched these people, I found myself progressively faced with the paradox of a dream realized but still with precarious living conditions. As if the mere fact of coming to Paris, whatever the circumstances, was enough to accomplish this dream, enriching themselves, but only in their pride to be there.
