Fired self portrait
by Adriano Castelli
According to ISTAT (Italian National Institute of Statistics) in 2009 380.000 persons lost their jobs in Italy - about 1000 people a day.1000 faces, 1000 hopes. For all of them everything is different except on, their homes, a shelter and a place to live, no longer some kind of motel in between the day before and the day after. And yes, the place to come back to life searching for a new, right direction, starting from a simple assumption: living with habits, ambitions, projects. My work starts with a look at my own condition – I am in fact among those who got fired last year. This project aims at creating the basis for a wider work on the unemployed and portray the way these people reinvent themselves and start looking at future with a new attitude.I will ask men and women in their thirties, who either lost their job or never had a regular occupation, to take part in my project by telling me their stories and showing me how they got back on their feet again. But also, they will be at liberty to find one more candidate for the project. In one year we could become 380.000 - 380.000 pictures, 380.000 stories, all tied by a same red line of hope and resilience.
