Magnify Malta

by Myriam Thyes

Since 2004, when Malta became a member of the European Union, more and more boat people, refugees from Africa, strand in Malta. Here, they have to live in prisons, tents and airplane hangars. At the same time, too many hotels and holiday apartments are built on the small island, and these buildings often remain empty or unfinishd.

The ship in the picture is a private yacht owned by Charles Simonyi. A software engineer who made the spreadsheet concept Microsoft Excel.

He is facinated by naval ships and has been involved in designing the ship.
Still, there’s a contrast between the woman and the ship. But another angle - kindof :)

    Thank you, very interesting!
I was told it was a second world war ship.
Why is this yacht, looking like a navy battle ship, lying at Grand Harbour of Malta for such a long time?

Myriam, I had no idea of what was happening in Malta (I’ve been there 25 years ago…). As usual with your work, you’ve given me plenty of food for thought!
