Over Floral Bedspreads
by Kelly Puleio
Over Floral Bedspreads, introduces the power of sexuality and eroticism that is not limited to or derivative from the socially constructed and expected male gaze. These women are using Puleio the same way in which she is using them. Both the artist and the subject crave a moment where they are seen as anything but what they have been sociallyconstructed to be: “feminine” objects of “sexual desire”, soft and pretty, performing under and for the “male gaze”. The women have never posed nude before and by consenting are asking Puleio to give them the “experience of recognition,” beyond the socially constructed sphere of the sexualized notions that typically accompany naked women in cheap motel rooms. At the same time, Puleio is using the subjects as stand-ins for her own insecurities around sexualized gender. She validates the “experience ofrecognition” without sexualizing the women, while creating an alternative visual language for sex.
