Synchronic Identity
by Hugo Nunes
In a search for my own identity, as an individual but also as a part of a migrant community in Bradford, I began to research the living conditions of temporary housing available to the many economic migrants who establish themselves in Bradford, West Yorkshire. By visiting a number of temporary shared houses, inhabited by migrant students and workers, like myself, I found their characters, personalities and stories amongst their objects, individual spaces and obviously themselves. I have witnessed their life styles ,and saw the issues that run parallel to all of them as a result of the temporary status of their lives, but also their individual characteristics as signs of an overall personal identity. Where cultural identity and personality are mixed together. These were times of very deep changes for them all, and few know where they want to be, in the near future, as they are divided by the nostalgic remembrances of their home countries and the new reality of a country with way more opportunities and a different life style often very appealing. Who they are now they were not, and they will not be, after this temporary migration experience.
