How The West Was Won

by John Dooley

Being born and raised in England, I have always looked on the American West from afar as a vast land of dramatic proportions. My views were shaped by TV Westerns, and American movies and literature. But after spending the last four years based in California as a photojournalist, the reality of man's relationship with the American landscape reveals itself in the most unexpected ways and places. This series of images touches on themes of discovery, acquisition, settlement, construction, division, development, population, conquest and extinction. Sometimes, all one needs to feel truly human - is the land.
