Let the world know we still do it with our hands

by Thanasis Lomef Zacharopoulos

Despite the exhaustion of the fish stocks, Catania's bay is still celebrated for the traditional fishing of small anchovies or Masculina da' Magghia in Sicilian a practice currently protected, with a Presidium, from the Slow Food movement. The Magghia refers to the meshes of the drift net, in which the fish is caught. The net floats attached to a rope and the meshes allow smaller fish to swim through, while the bigger ones get stuck in the net. The catch is still removed from the nets by hands. The use of drift-netting is controversial, since it is believed to be dangerous for dolphins, seabirds and turtles but at the same time part of a very old tradition that the locals believe inherited from the times of Homer.Usually fishermen go out at about 2am-3am in small boats. They travel about 10-20 miles out from Catania’s harbour. The boats return to the harbour in the early morning. They load their cars with the plastic buckets full of fish, sea water and ice and they drive straight to the market where they sell their catch.Biagio and his crew fish anchovies and sardines only using the drift-netting technique. They were very proud of their traditional way of fishing. They even asked us to publicize it. ”Let the world know we still do it with our hands, like a century ago” he said when we were on his boat sharing their breakfast waiting for the fish to fill the net.By Brigida Marovelli and Lomef

I was captured by the strong sense of dignity and pride that inspires this photographic series. The dualism of modern society is clear: can modernization progress on the tracks of tradition without destroying it?

  17. photographer says:

It’s incredible that a mediocre work like this is the most voted!!!!

  18. lomef says:

thank you ! I don’t know what this says about those photographs, but it definitely says something good about my friends. ;-)

  19. photographer says:

You are a lucky man, Lomef. Over 1400 friends!! WOW!!
Your work is nice, i like it, but is nothing special compared to others.
There are many other works in this competion that are more and more interesting than your portfolio.
If you are happy that your friends says to you “you are great, you are the best, you are fantastic”, it’s your right, but doesn’t make you automatically a great photographer.
For example, the work of the last year of Matteo Armellini “In the middle of nowhere” that is similar to you work, received only ONE vote, but it was the 3th place in the competition.
I don’t want to attack you, but i think that the public voting is useless and valueless.
