The Jury

The submitted photo stories will be judged by an international panel of industry professionals. They will assess the photo stories on their narrative strength, photographic excellence and artistic brilliance.

Marcel Feil
- curator FOAM Museum Amsterdam, NL

marcel-feil-foam_120Marcel Feil (1968) is curator at Foam_ Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam. After his
study Art History at the University of Amsterdam he worked for the Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture for four years. The next four years he was a staff member of the Amsterdam Centre for Photography curating small exhibitions with work of young emerging photographers, organizing lectures and the educational program. Since 2002 he works as curator at Foam and has organized a wide range of historical and contemporary photography exhibitions. He is also one of the editors of Foam Magazine, the international photography magazine published by Foam.

am Barzilay - director of Exhibitions of the
New York Photo Festival, USA

sam_jury_120 Sam Barzilay is the Director of Exhibitions of the New York Photo Festival. Prior to joining the nascent organization in its noble quest, he was a staff member of the VII Photo Agency in Paris and New York. In his previous lives he has been a social documentary photographer traveling extensively throughout Central Asia and the Caucasus, as well as a rather successful artist, most recently exhibiting his work in a solo exhibition at the Oslo ByMuseum in Norway. He is currently residing in New York City, awaiting marching orders from the voices in his head.


Ernesto Bazan
- photographer, teacher and publisher, Mexico

ernestobazan_portrait_1201 Ernesto Bazan was born in Palermo in 1959. He received his first camera when he was 14 years old and began photographing daily life in his native city and in the rural areas of Sicily. Photography has been more than a profession: a true passion, a mission in his life. Bazan has published several books: The Perpetual Past, Passing Through, The First Twenty Years, Island, Molo Nord. In 2008, his new publishing house BazanPhotos Publishing will print his new book Cuba on 14 years of life and photography on the island. His photographs have been collected by collectors and museums among which MOMA and ICP in New York, SFMOMA in San Francisco, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University, Durham, the South East Museum of Photography in Daytona, the Fondazione Italiana della Fotografia in Turin, the Biblioteque Nationale in Paris and the Musee Rattau in Arles.


Roy Kahmann
- owner of Kahmann gallery and co-publisher of GUP Magazine

roy_juryRoy Kahmann (1959) is owner of Kahmann gallery and co-publisher of GUP Magazine. During his career as an art director and designer for advertising and design agencies Roy has collected photography for over 30 years now; his vast collection ranging from both national to international photographers. The collection has still never been exhibited, but inspired Kahmann, besides managing two succesful businesses, to invest a lot in photography related initiatives.


Kadir van Lohuizen
- documentary photographer , Amsterdam NL

kadir_120_150 Kadir van Lohuizen started to work as free lance photojournalist in 1988. In 1989 he joined photoagency Hollandse Hoogte in Amsterdam. In 1996 Agence VU in Paris. Over the years Lohuizen has been working in many African conflicts: Sierra Leone, Angola, South Africa, Mozambique and former Zaire. Kadir’s work has been exhibited around the world and published in many books such as ‘Aderen’, a book about the seven rivers in the world and ‘Diamonds Matter’ about the diamond industry.

Judging proces
The entries will be judged in two rounds. First, the jury panel will review a shortlist of the entries and move those with the strongest appeal to a second round. The winners are chosen based on the judges determination and the combination of the four criteria:

Narrative strength
Photographic excellence
Originality
Artistic brilliance

Pre-selection
Before entering the contest, all entries will be screened to see if they fit in the chosen category and if the series has the required photographic and creative quality. Photo series that are assessed as too cliche or brutal will for example not make it trough the pre-selection. When trough the pre-selection, the entries will be published on the viewbookphotostory.com website and run for the public and jury prizes.

Public Voting
Viewbook PhotoStory is a public online event that everyone can be part of. Every visitor to this site can vote and comment on their favorite photo stories. There are special prizes for the public winners.
